Ferdowsi’s tomb
The tomb of the Shahnameh poet in Tus, outside the main fabric of Mashhad. Today’s stone monument is by Houshang Seyhoun, and Harounieh is nearby.
What it is
Ferdowsi is in Tus, not in central Mashhad. You leave the city toward the northwest. The garden, the marble monument and the underground hall of Shahnameh reliefs are the visit.
The present building was designed by Houshang Seyhoun and replaced an earlier twentieth-century form of the tomb. The white cube and the tall arch are what you see from a distance.
What to combine it with
Harounieh is in the same Tus area and does not fill a day alone. Ferdowsi plus Harounieh is a reasonable half-day, with an easy return to the centre. This page has no day ticket. If the museum or the gate keeps a separate hour, ask there.
