The building

Goharshad was built in the Timurid period for Goharshad Begum, wife of Shahrokh, and it is attached to the shrine. The architect is known as Qavam al-Din Shirazi. The iwans and turquoise tile are what separate it from the later courts.

Because it is inside the complex, it has no independent street entrance or ticket. Prayer and pilgrimage crowds decide how quiet it is.

A practical note

If you want one historic building beside the pilgrimage, this is it. Rushing for photographs makes the space harder for people who are praying. We do not publish a separate hour, because it follows the complex.
